中今：過去と未来のあいだにある今この瞬間

これまで小島が発表してきたニューヨーク、東京に続く、都市を写し出すシリーズの3都市目。本作の舞台はドイツ・ベルリンである。2015年から2025年までの10年間、現地に身を置き、この都市と対峙し続けた記録がここに収められている。

ベルリンは、先行する二都市に比べ人口規模こそ小さいが、旧東ドイツ時代の都市計画を色濃く残す広い道幅や建築構造が、街に独特の大きなスケール感を与えている。どこまでも均質で、揺るぎない強度を持つ街。その質感に向き合う中で、次第に浮き彫りになったのは、この都市に流れる静かで緩やかな時間だった。

本作の核となるのは、ベルリン特有の建築構造が生み出す「Hof（中庭）」である。建物がマトリョーシカ状に2重3重と重なり、その隙間にひっそりと佇む中庭。内でも外でもないその場所では、過去も未来も輪郭を失い、ただ“今”だけが鮮明に浮かび上がる。自己と他者の境界さえ曖昧にするその空間は、古神道の時間概念である「中今（なかいま）」と静かに共鳴する。

Nakaima — between past and future

 
The third city in an ongoing series exploring urban landscapes, following New York and Tokyo, this latest work turns to Berlin, Germany. Between 2015 and 2025, the photographer lived in the city, returning to it over the course of a decade, tracing its presence through sustained observation.

Though smaller in population than the previous two metropolises, Berlin retains the imprint of former East German urban planning. Its broad avenues and distinctive architectural structures create a uniquely expansive sense of scale—marked by a quiet strength and striking uniformity. In confronting this density, what gradually revealed itself was the city’s particular rhythm of time: slow, steady, and deeply felt.

At the heart of the work lies the Hof—the inner courtyard characteristic of Berlin’s architecture. Buildings unfold like Matryoshka dolls, layered two or three deep, with courtyards concealed between them. Neither fully interior nor exterior, these spaces dissolve the contours of past and future, allowing only the immediacy of the present to surface. Here, the boundary between self and other softens, quietly resonating with Nakaima—the ancient Shinto concept of the eternal present.

Yasutaka Kojima (b.1977, Tokyo, Japan) lives and works inBerlin. He graduated from Kokugakuin University Department ofLiterature Traditional Culture major and in 2006 moved to theUS. Graduated from the ICP (International Center ofPhotography), General Studies Program, NY. Received the ICPDirector’s Scholarship Award. 2011 recipient of the overseasstudy program for upcoming artists of the Japanese Agency ofCultural Affairs.
